Acne Treatment with Blue Light Phototherapy

Propionibacterium acnes
Propionibacterium acnes is common in patients with acne.

Bacteria play an important part in developing acne, indeed, Propionibacterium acnes is frequently found in acne patients. Blue light effectively eradicates Propionibacterium acnes, which is the rationale for blue light phototherapy (not to be confused with UV light). A special filter permits only blue rays (wavelengths 405-450 nm) to pass through and destroy the bacteria. Prior to treatment, fluorescent diagnostics can help to identify whether or not phototherapy is likely to succeed.
