Photodynamic Therapy of Basal-Cell Carcinomas and Early Stage Skin Cancers

Photodynamic skin therapy (PDT) is a modern, non-destructive, and highly effective treatment for basal-cell carcinomas and actinic keratosis.

First, a special ointment is applied to the affected area to make the skin light-sensitive. In a second step, the skin is exposed to water-filtered infrared A (wIRA®) light to destroy the diseased cells while sparing healthy tissue.

The therapy has few side effects; rarely, the patient might feel a slight burning sensation or warmth. Frequently, a one-time treatment is enough to achieve a cosmetically good, unblemished result. The success of treatment can be confirmed using photodynamic diagnostics (PDD).
